Donald McDonald Nicolson was born on the 13th January 1882 to Mary and Donald. In 1901 he came to the University of Glasgow where he studied a variety of subjects including: Latin, Logic, Education, Mathematics, Natural Philosophy, English and History. He graduated MA on the 9th November 1905. It is likely that Donald also completed teacher training at the Glasgow Church of Scotland Training College, forerunner of Jordanhill College of Education, now the University of Strathclyde, but the College’s student registers for the period 1901-1905 have not survived.
During the First World War, Donald was on the General List but served with the Kings Own Scottish Borderers. 2nd Lieutenant Donald McDonald Nicolson was killed in action on the 19th April 1917 during the Second Battle of Gaza, aged 35. His body was never found and so he is commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial. Donald’s name also appears on his father's gravestone at Muirburn Road, Glassford where his mother and two brothers are remembered. He is further recorded on the Glasgow Provincial Training College War Memorial located in the David Stow Building on the former Jordanhill Campus.
