George William Jones
George William Jones was born in 1898 in the village of Mytholmroyd, Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire, England. His father, William Jones, was a Farrier and General Smith, and his mother was Ellen Jones. At the time of George's death, his parents were residing at 28 Hartley Street, Halifax, Yorkshire.
The published edition of the University Roll of Honour for 1918 states that George William Jones had achieved a BSc and LLB and that he was a student 1910-11. No evidence to support this has been found in the University of Glasgow records.
The 2/4th Bn. Duke of Wellington's Regiment (West Riding Regiment), were involved in attacking the Hindenburg Line in early May 1917. Private George William Jones was one of many casualties sustained during this offensive, killed in action on the 3rd May 1917 while fighting near the village of Ecoust-St Mein, 16 kilometres south-east of Arras in the Battle of Arras. His name is inscribed on the Arras Memorial at Faubourg D’Amiens Cemetery in Arras. He was 19 years old.
