Andrew Yuill Pollock Johnston

Andrew Yuill Pollock Johnston was born in 1895 in Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire. He was the son of Andrew Yuill Johnston, a Draper, and Mary Johnston. Andrew matriculated in 1914 aged 18 and he studied Medicine for two years. He attended classes in Chemistry, Zoology, Anatomy and Physiology.

In August 1916 he was commissioned to the 5th Bn. King’s Own Scottish Borderers, and in September 1916 he was sent to France. 2nd Lieutenant Andrew Yuill Pollock Johnston was killed in action on the 5th October 1917. He is buried at Hooge Crater Cemetery, Belgium, (Grave Ref: IXA.A.2), and is commemorated on Glasgow University’s Roll of Honour, the Lochmaben War Memorial, the Dumfries Academy memorial and on the former Barras United Free Church memorial now in Lochmaben Parish Church.
