Roll of Honour
2nd Lieutenant
Anthony Stoddard Murray
MA BL
Anthony Stoddard Murray was born on the 10th of March 1880, and was the son of David Murray and Frances Porter Stoddard of Moorpark, Cardross. Anthony came from a well known family - his father was a significant graduate and member of the University of Glasgow, serving on the University of Glasgow court for over thirty years, as well as belonging to a variety of committees such as the Finance committee and the Library and Museums committee. As well as a prolific solicitor, he is also known as one of Scotland’s greatest bibliophiles, with a library estimated at over 40,000 volumes. Anthony was also the maternal grandson of Arthur Francis Stoddard, the American silk business owner from Massachusetts who created the famous Stoddard carpet industry in Renfrewshire, which went on to carpet the White House in the United States.
Anthony gained his undergraduate degree in Arts from the University of St Andrews. He joined the University of Glasgow in 1901 and, following in his father's footsteps, enrolled in the Faculty of Law. He was a successful student, achieving firsts in Civil Law, Forensic Medicine, and Conveyancing. He almost achieved a perfect University record, gaining only one mark short of a first in Scottish Law. He graduated with a BL on the 3rd of November 1904.
After completing his degree, Anthony worked as a solicitor, becoming a Procurator and Notary Public in Glasgow. He married Hester Murray, and the couple lived at 18 Woodside Crescent, Glasgow. His civilian life was interrupted by the outbreak of the First World War, and Anthony joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. On 22nd March 1918, he was wounded and captured at Bellenglise, north of St. Quentin. He died of his injuries the next day.
Second Lieutenant Anthony Stoddard Murray is remembered on the University of Glasgow War Memorial, and in the University of St Andrew's Roll of Honour.
