Norman McGaan Smith

Norman McGaan Smith was born on the 11 May 1892 in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. He was the second son of Adam and Constance Smith. Adam Smith was a merchant.

Norman was educated at Queen’s Royal College in Port-of-Spain and then later at Glasgow High School. He matriculated at the University of Glasgow age 17 in 1909 to study medicine. He was a good student earning his best marks in Clinical Surgery and being awarded class prizes in nearly all of his subjects, including a 1st class certificate in ‘Diseases of the Ear’. Norman graduated MB ChB

on the 20 April 1915.

During the First World War Norman enlisted with the Royal Army Medical Corps and he was soon promoted to Captain of the 2nd East Anglian Field Ambulance service. He died on the 12 December 1917 from wounds sustained in action, aged 25 in Palestine. He is buried at the Ramleh War Cemetery.
