Alfred Saunders Hill

His secondary education was at Queens Park School, where he completed the Junior Student’s Certificate course and obtained university entrance qualifications.

Initially, Alfred entered the University in 1910 in the Arts Faculty, and in his first year studied Maths and German, winning a first class certificate in the latter. However, by the time of his graduation in 1915, he was studying in both the Arts Faculty and the Science Faculty and he graduated on 20th November 1915 with both a second class honours MA in Mathematics and Natural Philosophy(Physics) and a BSc. This combination of Arts and Science did result in him spending 5 years at University.

In October 1915, Alfred proceeded to the Glasgow Provincial Training College, forerunner of Jordanhill College of Education, now the University of Strathclyde. He enrolled for a one-year course of teacher training for University graduates, leading to both the General Certificate, which was the qualification to teach in primary schools, and to qualification as a teacher of the higher subjects of Mathematics and Science. The College student register records the general estimate of his capacity as a teacher as ‘Promising,’ but indicates that he enlisted on 12 February 1916, before completing his training.

He was a cadet in the University OTC, and so went straight into the forces and in November 1916 he was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery.

He was killed on 20th November 1917 during the fighting around Ypres as part of the 109th Siege Battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery, and is buried in the La Brique Military Cemetery No2 West-Vlaanderen Belgium (Ypres )

As well as the University Roll of Honour he is commemorated in the Queens Park School Memorial Plaque, which now resides in Langside Library following the demolition of the last part of the school.
