William McQuhae
William McQuhae (1737-1823) died. McQuhae graduated MA from the University in 1856 and became a minister in Ayrshire. He was a tutor and friend of James Boswell and is immortalised in Robert Burns' poem The Twa Herds as " that curs'd rascal ca'd M'Quhae." Son of David McQuhae and Margaret Laurie. Married (November 1, 1765) to Elizabeth Park (d. 1780). Married (June 3, 1782) to Margaret Laurie (d. 1824). He fathered at least 16 children with his wives. Sometime tutor of David and John Boswell. Educated at Edinburgh. Minister of St. Quivox, Ayrshire (1764-?) and sometime Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. Author of Difficulties which attend the Practice of Religion no just Argument against it, a Sermon (1785). His mother and second wife seems to have had identical names. Life with James Boswell: McQuhae had been a private tutor of JB's brothers John and David in the late 1750s, and until 1762-3 was one of JB's closest friends.
