The Square, 11

Description

11 The Square, the townhouse nearest No.12 - The Principal's Lodging, currently houses the Research Strategy & Innovation Office.

No.11 was one of the 13 townhouses built for the University Professors in 1870–1871 by George Gilbert Scott. When built, 11 The Square was intended for the Professors of Natural Philosophy.

The home’s first resident was Sir William Thomson, Lord Kelvin. He lived at No.11 from 1870 until his retirement in 1899. This house, although looking identical to the other townhouses, was probably the first house in the world to be lit entirely by electricity. The house still houses a clock of Kelvin's own design, which spans two floors.

Lord Kelvin was followed by Andrew Gray , Professor of Natural Philosophy from 1899 to 1923 who lived at the house until 1924. The next resident was Harold Wilson, Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University from 1924 to 1925, he lived at No.11 until 1926. From 1926 to 1943 Edward Taylor Jones lived at No.11. He was Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University from 1925 to 1943. The house’s next resident was Philip Dee, Professor of Natural Philosophy from 1943 to 1972. After Dee, the house at No.11 no longer held the Professors of Natural Philosophy.

Allan Galloway was Professor of Divinity at the University from 1968 to 1982 and lived at No.11 from 1972 to 1982. Allan Galloway's wife, Mrs Sally Galloway, remarks in her reminiscences that her and her husband were responsible for winding Lord Kelvin's clock and that it kept excellent time!

Allan Galloway was followed by University Chaplain Rev David Millar who lived at No.11 from 1982 to 1988 with his wife Jean. During their stay at 11 The Square, the home became a haven for staff and students. The townhouse’s last resident was also a University Chaplain. Rev Colin Anderson was Chaplain at the University from 1989 until 1994 and stayed at No.11 with his wife Helen and family during this time.

In 2003 the townhouse became the Chaplaincy Centre and currently houses the Research Strategy & Innovation Office.
