Dorothy Rowntree was the first woman to graduate with a degree in Engineering at the University of Glasgow. She was born in Glasgow on 16th January 1903, the daughter of Robert Stanley Rowntree, a ship surveyor, and lived in Kelvinside, Glasgow.

Dorothy first took classes in the session 1922/23 and graduated with a BSc in Engineering (Naval Architecture) on 24th April 1926.

In 1928 Dorothy became personal assistant to President Professor Bayard Dodge at the American University in Beirut. There she met and married Norman Joly, and lived in Palestine, Israel and Lebanon until after the Second World War and returned to the UK in their old age.
