Biography of Pat Kane

Pat Kane Patrick Mark (known as Pat) Kane (1964- ) is a graduate of the University who was Rector from 1990 until 1993.

Born in Glasgow, Kane studied English at the University and graduated MA (Hons) in 1985. He was the founder with his brother Gregory of the pop group Hue and Cry and subsequently became a journalist and broadcaster.

Kane defeated the Labour MP Tony Benn in the rectorial election of 1990. He campaigned for creche provision and greater access to campus buildings and facilities for the disabled. In 1992 he attracted media attention by walking out of the Commemoration Day ceremony, in protest at the award of an honorary degree to Conservative politician and former Secretary of State for Scotland, George Younger.
