Sir John Stirling-Maxwell
Sir John Stirling Maxwell (1866-1956) 10th Baronet, bequeathed his late father's collection of rare books to the University.
Sir John was the son of Sir William Stirling Maxwell who was Chancellor of the University from 1875 to 1878. Sir John was the Conservative MP for the College Division of Glasgow, 1895-1906; the chairman of several national institutions including the Forestry Commission, the Ancient Monuments Board and the Royal Fine Art Commission for Scotland and a founder member in 1931 (and later President) of the National Trust for Scotland.
After his death, Sir John's daughter Anne gave the family home, Pollok House, and several acres of the Pollok estate to the City of Glasgow.
